2012 Zinfandel Teldeschi
Teldeschi Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley
The Ray Teldeschi Vineyard is located to the west of Healdsburg in the Dry Creek Valley. The vineyards have a southern exposure giving the vines (some of which are 115 years old) plenty of sunlight. Like most great Zinfandel sites, the old vines are head pruned, yields are low and the grapes are packed with intense flavors of cherry, blackberry and boysenberry.
The grapes were harvested on September 30, 2012. This wine is a 50/50 blend of 100+ year old vine zinfandel and “new” 35 year old vines. The fruit was cold soaked for four days prior to yeast inoculation. The wine was aged in 25% new American Oak with the balance in one year old and neutral barrels. After 20 months in barrel aging, the wine was bottled on June 4, 2014.
Upon winning a Gold Medal at the Beverage Tasting Institute, the 2012 Jazz Cellars Teldeschi Zinfandel was described as follows: “Dusty garnet color. Aromas and flavors of dried berries, butter roasted nuts and chocolate orange peel with a silky, tangy, fruity medium body and a tingling, competing, medium-long spiced cherries, vanilla fudge, brown and peppery spices, and cedar finish with well-integrated, chewy tannins and moderate oak. A ripe, juicy Zinfandel with great structure.”
